I believe this is what we, in the business, refer to as вЂњa bit fucked.вЂќДЇor most of Mafia 3, youвЂ™re driving around the city doing fairly menial tasks for fairly uninteresting people.

Instead, itвЂ™s a semi-linear progression to take control of the territories in the city, mostly through a series of repetitive sub-missions. It doesnвЂ™t have as much ludicrous variety as Saints Row.

It doesnвЂ™t quite have the coherent open-world, sandbox-y feel of the GTA series. ItвЂ™s not as linear, story-focused, or character-focused as the previous Mafia games. If youвЂ™ve listened to the podcast youвЂ™ll already know some of this, but I came to the conclusion that Mafia 3 doesnвЂ™t really take its cues from Mafia, or GTA, or Saints Row: itвЂ™s closer to AssassinвЂ™s Creed than anything. ThatвЂ™s not to say itвЂ™s perfect, or anything, but other than the occasional вЂњChrist, that looks weirdвЂќ it didnвЂ™t upset me nearly so much as it did in the first hour. IвЂ™ll note that the framerate patch, which removed the 30FPS cap, made matters a lot better IвЂ™ll also note that I stopped caring about the low-res textures and frankly bizarre lighting effects before too long. The shotguns in particular have a lovely thunk to them.ДЄ lotвЂ™s already been said about the technical issues, so IвЂ™m not going to harp on about them too much. Mafia 3вЂs weapons are, largely, pretty beefy.
